What does MSM mean, and why some men reject gay

2 min read

MSM means men who have sex with men. It is a health and research term. It is not a community, a bar, or a compliment. Clinics use it so they can talk about HIV and STIs without forcing you to say gay or bisexual. Some men also use the gap on purpose: they have sex with men and will never take the identity. Both uses are real. Only one of them is a home.

Why medicine says MSM

Risk follows behaviour. A married man who has anal sex with men needs the same swabs as a man with a husband, whether or not he likes the word gay. MSM lets a nurse write that down without a fight at the front desk. How often to get STI tested still applies.

If a clinic only knows you as 'straight' because you said so, they may skip the rectal swab. That is how infections get missed. You can use MSM in a clinic and gay at home. Plenty of us do the reverse.

Why some men reject gay

Fear, family, religion, race, class, a marriage, a country, or genuine dislike of the culture they were shown. Some are bisexual and tired of being told to pick. Some are men who want sex with men and not a parade. What does Gay mean? is still the word this Network centres. We do not hunt people for not wearing it.

Rejection of the word is not always politics. Sometimes it is internalised shame. Sometimes it is Stealth, discreet, and down-low as a safety plan. You cannot tell which from a username.

On this Network

Unite Gay Network is for gay and bisexual men. If you have sex with men and you want community among men, you can be here without a purity test. If you are here only to extract sex from out men while treating them as a dirty secret that puts them at risk, that is not a identity debate. That is a consent and safety problem.

Read Queer, LGBT+, and why Unite Gay Network says gay and bisexual men. Join if the word gay is a door you can live with, even if you do not put it on a shirt.
