Stealth, discreet, and down-low
Stealth, discreet, and down-low are words men use when they are not publicly out, or not out as men who have sex with men. They can mean safety, marriage, a job, a country, or a double life that is costing someone. They get stigma because they have been used to hide risk and to treat out men as a dirty secret. The words are not one thing. The behaviour is what you have to judge.
What people usually mean
Discreet often means 'do not out me, no public couple photos, maybe no face pic yet.' Down-low (DL) has a particular history in some Black and Latino scenes: sex with men alongside a straight public life. Stealth, in some trans contexts, means not being read as trans; on some apps men also use it as another word for hidden.
MSM is the clinic version. What does MSM mean, and why some men reject gay?
When it is safety
A hostile country, a violent family, a visa, a workplace that would fire you: discretion is a plan. Living as a gay or bisexual man in a hostile country. When you are not out at work. You do not owe a stranger on an app your employer.
Ask for the specific boundary: no tagging, public meetup first, no contact at home. Specific is respectful. Fog is usually fear or a wife who does not know.
When it is a problem for the other man
If you are using an out man as a secret in a way that risks his housing, his job, or his health (including not talking about STIs because 'this is not who I am'), that is not discretion. That is dumping the cost on him. Building a relationship when you are not out.
Out men are allowed to decline DL as a dating filter without hating closeted men as a class. A boundary is not a pogrom.
On this Network
You can be discreet and still be a member. You cannot harass men who are visible. Unite Gay Network is a member space, not a billboard. Join if a closed room is the point. Shame and safety get confused; Homophobia, biphobia, and internalised shame helps unpick which one you are carrying.
