What does Bisexual mean?

2 min read

Bisexual, on this Network, means a man who is attracted to men and also to women, or, more broadly, to more than one gender. The proportions do not have to be 50/50. The attraction does not have to show up in the same week. You are not required to be dating a woman right now to be bisexual, and you are not 'actually gay' because you are here among men. Unite Gay Network is for gay and bisexual men. Both words are on the door for a reason.

A man, not a phase

A lot of us were told bisexuality is a stop on the way to gay, a cover for a marriage, or greed. Some men do come out as gay after using bi as a softer word. That happens. It does not cancel the men for whom both attractions are real and lasting. If you know the pull toward men and toward women is not a performance, you can stop arguing with people who need you to pick a team.

You can be bisexual and monogamous. You can be bisexual and only dating men for the next decade. Behaviour is not the same thing as capacity. Health clinics may still need to know who you have sex with. That is risk, not identity.

Bi-erasure, including in gay spaces

Erasure is the habit of treating bisexual men as gay when we are with men, straight when we are with women, and untrustworthy in both rooms. On apps it sounds like 'no bis' or 'just come out already.' In straight company it sounds like 'so you are gay now.' On a gay-focused network it can sound like a joke that never quite includes you.

You do not owe anyone a performance of equal-opportunity desire. You also do not have to hide the rest of your life to be welcome among men. Bisexual men and bi-erasure is the longer piece. This page is the definition we actually stand behind.

Life on a gay-focused network

This site centres men who want men: for sex, for love, for community. If you are bisexual, that part of you is the part this Network is built to host. The rest of your life is still yours. You will see gay history, gay venues, and gay slang because that is the shared infrastructure. You are not a guest in it.

If you are married to a woman and you are here, be honest with yourself about risk, consent, and whether anyone at home is being used as a cover. Discretion is not a free pass to put someone else in danger. Building a relationship when you are not out and Leaving a mixed-orientation marriage are written without the usual sermon.

Words next door

Some men prefer pansexual, queer, or no label. Use what you can live with. MSM is a health term, not a home. What does Gay mean? sits beside this article because many bisexual men date, play, and organise with gay men every week. You belong in those rooms. You belong in this Knowledge Center. Join if you want the rest of the Network, not only the glossary.
