Building a relationship when you are not out
You can love a man and still not be out at work, at home, or in your country. Plenty of us have done it. A double life can be a temporary shelter. It can also grind both of you down, especially the one who is being hidden. This page is honest about cost. It is not a demand that you come out on a timetable that would get you hurt.
Secret is not the same as private
Private is a couple who do not perform on Instagram. Secret is a couple where one of you does not exist in the other's daylight. If you are the hidden one, you get to decide how long you will live in the gap. If you are the one hiding him, be specific about why, for how long, and what 'safe' would look like.
When you are not out at work and Living as a gay or bisexual man in a hostile country are real constraints. 'My mum might be sad' is a different category. Do not mix them to win an argument.
The practical risks
Phones, photos, a joint lease, a medical emergency where family does not know he exists, a border, a blackmailer. Have a plan for each. Do not keep a relationship only in apps that would destroy you if screenshotted. Or do, and admit the fragility.
If there is a wife who does not know, you are not only in the closet. You are in a triangle. Leaving a mixed-orientation marriage and sexual health honesty apply. Her body is not collateral.
What it does to love
Some couples get closer in the bunker. Some become jailer and inmate. Watch for control dressed as safety: 'you can't go out, someone might see.' Watch for contempt: 'if you loved me you'd post me.' Both can be unfair. A counsellor who understands closets is worth more than advice from men who came out at 19 in a safe city.
A life with some daylight
Even a small chosen circle (two friends who know, a member community with access control) reduces the pressure on the couple to be everything. Unite Gay Network can be one of those rooms. Join. You do not have to go public to stop being entirely alone. You do have to stop pretending a secret has no bill.
