What is a community centre versus a gay bar
A gay bar sells drinks and a night. A community centre sells a room: HIV testing, a youth group you aged out of, a choir, a lunch, a solicitor's surgery, a Pride planning meeting. Both are infrastructure. They are not interchangeable. Unite Gay Network's Locations Finder lists both because adult men need both.
What a bar is for
Meeting, flirting, dancing, being among men without an appointment. Bars kept us alive when nothing else would have us. They also run on alcohol, door policy, and profit. Substance use beyond chemsex is why that matters. Nightlife etiquette in a new city is how not to make a fool of yourself.
A leather bar, a bear bar, and a chart-pop club are different tools. Read the pin.
What a community centre is for
Daylight, services, and people who are not there to buy a round. Older men, men who do not drink, men looking for a lawyer or a peer group, men who want to volunteer. If you only ever go out at 11 p.m., you are using half the culture. Older and younger gay men in the same community.
Some centres are mixed LGBT. Some hours are men's. Check. Courtesy still applies.
Saunas, clubs, sports, faith
Sex venues, sports teams, choirs, and affirming congregations are further types. The Finder is not a complete census of human life. It is a start. See What is a leather or fetish community for one extra branch.

Use more than one kind of room
A life that only happens in bars is a thin life. A life that never goes out is a thin life of another kind. Join Unite Gay Network and treat the map as a menu, not as a single night. Community is the thing you can still go to when you have stopped drinking, when you are new in town, or when you need a form filled, not only a look.
