Older and younger gay men in the same community
Gay and bisexual men's scenes are oddly segregated by age for a people who lost a generation to AIDS and who still learn survival from each other. Younger men get treated as content. Older men get treated as invisible or predatory. Both insults are stupid. A living community needs men who remember the plague years and men who grew up with PrEP in the same room, not as a kink, as a public.
Ageism cuts both ways
Apps that filter out anyone over 35, door policies that want a certain torso, and 'daddy' as the only role left to you after 50 are all ways of saying older men are not peers. The reverse (sneering at younger men as vapid, ungrateful, or not 'really' gay because they missed the funerals) is also a way of refusing company.
You do not have to date across decades to share a community. You do have to stop talking as if the other group is a different species.
Mentorship without a script
Older men can tell you which clinic is decent, what a raid felt like, how to stay on treatment, how to leave a marriage. Younger men can tell you how the apps actually work now, which laws moved, which words changed. That exchange is mentorship. It is not automatic ownership of anyone's body.
If sex is part of an age-gap relationship, read Age-gap relationships between men on power and care. Community is wider than dating. Do not collapse the two so that the only way an older man is allowed in the room is as a wallet or a fetish.
AIDS memory is not a weapon
The men who lived through the worst years are not required to perform trauma so that younger men 'respect history.' Younger men are not required to feel guilty for having been born later. HIV today is a shared problem, not a morality play. Share the knowledge. Drop the hierarchy.
Gay history beyond Stonewall is for everyone in the room.
How to actually mix
Choirs, leather clubs, community centres, sports, and volunteer shifts mix ages better than Saturday peak hour at a circuit venue. Use the Locations Finder and look for the places that are not only a dance floor. Unite Gay Network is built for men across adult life: join and do not filter your own community out of existence.
