Cruising, saunas, and public sex: know the legal risk

2 min read

Gay and bisexual men have always found each other outside the living room: licensed saunas, backrooms, parks, beaches, toilets. Some of those places are legal businesses with rules. Some are traditions that can still get you arrested, robbed, or beaten, including in countries where being gay is legal. This page is harm reduction. It is not a map, not a how-to, and not encouragement to break the law.

Licensed venues are not the same as public space

A sauna, club, or leather bar that is allowed to operate is a business. It has door policy, consent rules, and usually a manager. You can still be banned, pickpocketed, or push past someone's no. You are not usually committing a public-indecency offence by being there. Read the house rules. Nightlife etiquette in a new city.

The Locations Finder lists places of this kind. It does not list parks. There is a reason.

Public sex and the law

Sex in parks, beaches, car parks, and toilets is still illegal or enforceable in many places that have otherwise decriminalised homosexuality. Police, private security, and phones with cameras all exist. Entrapment has a history in our communities. 'Everyone does it' is not a defence.

We will not tell you how to find or use those spaces. If you already know the risk in your city, you already know more than a website should spell out. Reducing harm means: know the local law, do not involve people who did not consent to the risk, and do not assume a tourist is as street-smart as a local.

Assault, theft, and health

Isolated places at night are where men get robbed and attacked, including by people pretending to cruise. Meeting from an app in a private home has different risks; meeting in public for sex has others. Neither is inherently 'the gay way.' It is a risk calculation.

STIs, PEP, and consent do not take a holiday because the sex was quick. Consent, alcohol, and sex. If something goes wrong, medical care first. Law is a local decision you have to make with people who know your jurisdiction.

A standard we will stand behind

Wanting sex is not a crime. Putting yourself or someone else in the way of arrest or violence for a story is a bad trade. Use licensed venues, members' clubs, and private agreements between adults. Use this Network to find the former. Join. If you want community rather than a gamble, start with the map, not with a rumour about a car park.
