Consent, alcohol, and sex
Consent is a clear, ongoing yes from someone who is free and able to give it. Alcohol and other drugs do not create a special gay exception. They make the line easier to miss and easier to pretend you missed. This page is for men who drink, men who play, and men who have woken up unsure. It is not a courtroom. It is a standard you can actually use.
Yes has to be possible
If he cannot speak, stay awake, or understand where he is, he cannot consent. If you cannot, you should not be having sex. Going home together is not consent. A Grindr message from Thursday is not consent. A bottom label is not consent. What do Top, Bottom, Versatile, Vers-Top, and Vers-Bottom mean? is preference, not a contract.
People freeze. People try to please. Check anyway. 'Do you want to keep going?' is not a mood killer. It is how adults do this.
Alcohol and other drugs
A bit of drink is common. Blackout, chemsex sessions, and stacked pills are a different country. The more intoxicated the room, the more you should slow down, simplify, and be willing to stop completely. Chemsex: harm reduction without shame and Substance use beyond chemsex cover the wider pattern.
If your plan depends on him being too drunk to object, that is the plan. Call it what it is and do not do it.
If something went wrong
If you were assaulted, you can seek medical care, sexual health screening, and support even if you are not sure you want to talk to police. PEP may be time-critical. See PrEP and PEP, in plain language. Friends who believe you matter. So do services that already work with gay and bisexual men.
If you think you crossed a line, stop contacting him for sex, do not lobby him to 'sort it out' in private if he does not want that, and get advice. Shame-spirals that turn into pressure on the other man make it worse.
A usable house rule
Sober enough to have a sentence. Specific about what is happening. Allowed to change his mind. You do the same. That standard survives Pride, saunas, and a bottle of wine. If you want community that can talk about this without giggling it away, join Unite Gay Network. If you are in crisis, get help first.
