Lesbian usually means a woman whose romantic and sexual attraction is toward women. You will see the word at Pride, in news, and in mixed LGBT spaces. Unite Gay Network is not a lesbian network. We include this short page so gay and bisexual men can use the neighbouring language accurately, not as a core focus of this Knowledge Center.

A short, accurate meaning

A lesbian is a woman attracted to women. Some lesbians also use queer or other words; some do not. The details of that conversation belong to women. You do not need to referee them in a gay men's bar.

Lesbian is not a slur to throw at a gay man, and it is not a costume. If you mean a woman who loves women, say lesbian. If you mean something else, say what you mean.

Why this page is short

This Knowledge Center is written for gay and bisexual men. Lesbian life, bars, health, and politics are real and they are not our subject. Mixed Pride spaces, some community centres, and some families will put us in the same room. Courtesy is knowing the word and not speaking over it.
