U=U: undetectable equals untransmittable

U=U means that a person living with HIV who is on effective treatment and has an undetectable viral load does not pass HIV on through sex. That is not a slogan. It is the result of large studies, and it should change how you date, how you talk, and how you treat men who did the work of getting into care. It does not mean HIV is gone. It means treatment is also prevention.

What undetectable actually means

Viral load is the amount of HIV in blood. Undetectable means it is below the level a standard lab test can measure, usually because someone is taking treatment as prescribed. It is not a one-time trophy. It is a status you maintain with pills or injections and follow-up bloods.

U=U applies to sexual transmission when that undetectable status is stable. It does not automatically cover every medical situation in the world, and it does not block other STIs. Your clinician's numbers are the ones that count, not a screenshot from a group chat.

Why it still meets stigma

Plenty of men still reject undetectable partners as if it were 1992. That is fear doing the thinking. An undetectable man on treatment is not a higher HIV risk than a man who has never tested. If you are negative, PrEP is your tool. If he is undetectable, treatment is his. Together you have a stack.

Disclosure is still a human conversation. In some places it is also a legal one. Know your local law. Do not use the law as a weapon when science already says sex is not transmitting.

Dating like an adult

Ask. Answer. Do not ghost a man for doing the responsible thing and saying he is positive and undetectable. If you need time to read, take the time, then come back. When one of you is living with HIV is for the relationship after the first message.

If you are positive and not yet undetectable, that is a medical task, not a moral failure. Get into care. HIV today is the wider picture.

A community standard

Unite Gay Network will not pretend U=U is controversial science. We will also not pretend access is equal. If you need people who already live this, join. If you need a clinic, go to one. Knowledge without treatment is just trivia.
