Gay travel safety by destination
A cheap flight is not a safety assessment. Before you travel as a gay or bisexual man, check the law, the local scene, and what your phone would show if someone else held it. This is not paranoia. It is the same care you would take with money or medication. Some destinations are easy. Some are a calculated risk. Some are a no.
Law, practice, and tourism marketing
Look up current criminal law, not a 2014 listicle. Then look up how it is used: entrapment, raids, blackmail, or a quiet 'we don't bother tourists.' A resort can be relaxed while a nearby town is not. ILGA World (global LGBT rights research) and local LGBT organisations beat influencer reels.
Marriage at home does not travel automatically. Know whether your papers mean anything at a hospital or a border.
The scene is data
A living bar scene, a Pride, a clinic that advertises MSM hours. Those are signals. So is a total absence. Use the Locations Finder as one layer. Ask men who live there, not only men who went for a weekend. How to use the Locations Finder when you travel.
Tourist gayborhoods can be safer than the rest of a city and still full of pickpockets. Ordinary street sense still applies.
Digital and hotel risk
Dating apps, photos, and a lock screen are part of your luggage. In some countries they have been used against men. Think about what you carry, who you meet from an app, and whether a hotel computer or a shared tour bus is a place to log into anything. When a destination is hostile to LGBT people is the harder version of this advice.
Do not out local men in your stories, tags, or group photos. You leave. They do not.
A go / slow / no framework
Go: law is safe, scene exists, you would hold his hand without a second thought. Slow: some risk, stick to known venues, tighten the phone. No: criminalisation plus active enforcement, or a trip whose whole point would require you to be visible. Wanting a holiday is not worth a cell.
