Gay and bisexual men of colour

Gay culture as advertised is still often white, Western, and gym-lit. The actual world of gay and bisexual men is not. If you are Black, brown, Asian, Indigenous, Arab, mixed, or otherwise not the default face on the flyer, you already know the gap between the poster and the door policy. This page names racism and fetishisation without asking you to educate every room from scratch.

The scene is not neutral

Door selection, dating-app filters, 'preference' lists, and who gets desired versus who gets used are not accidents of taste every time. Taste exists. So does a hierarchy that treats white men as the prize and everyone else as a type. You are allowed to want who you want. You are not required to swallow a ranking system dressed up as chemistry.

What is gay culture? is bigger than this. This article is the part that article would be lying without.

Fetish is not the same as desire

Being wanted for a stereotype (BBC, 'Asian boy,' 'Latin spice,' the quiet one, the exotic one) is not the same as being wanted as a man. It can still be hot for some people, in some scenes, with someone who can hear a no. It becomes ugly when you are not allowed to be boring, old, camp, religious, or uninterested in playing the bit.

You do not have to perform race to deserve sex or a seat. You also do not have to date only inside your group to be 'loyal.' Those are someone else's politics on your body.

Double closets and family

Some families would rather you were gay in another city than gay at the wedding. Some communities already live under racism and treat queerness as extra risk. Coming out is not the same calculation as it is for a white man in a liberal neighbourhood. What is coming out? still applies. The cost analysis is yours.

Chosen family among men of colour is often the actual safety net. That is not separatism. That is how people survive rooms that only want them as décor.

Finding rooms that are not a test

Look for nights, groups, and bars that are run by and for men like you, not only once a year as a themed party. The Locations Finder will not solve racism. It will help you find the door. Unite Gay Network is worldwide and mixed; join and be picky about where you spend your time. You do not owe the default scene your patience.
